New York and California are looking to the rest of the nation for ways to improve the health of their residents. To get a better handle on the health of the nation, the states and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are launching a new initiative on Tuesday, the largest health data partnership ever, HealthDay reported. "Today's announcement represents a bold new partnership between California, New York, and the rest of the United States," said Bill Glauber, acting director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. The three-state partnership is called the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (the Center for HIV Prevention Research in the United States). "This unprecedented collaboration will advance our shared mission to ensure that all people have the tools and support they need to live healthier, more productive lives and to help prevent and end the HIV and viral hepatitis epidemics," CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden said. The initiative will pool data from the three states and analyze it to develop practical ways to improve public health, the CDC said. "We need to find ways to track and understand trends in HIV/STD infections, so we can see what works, and then replicate those successful strategies around the country," Frieden said. The CDC said the initiative is the largest of its kind. "This is going to be a game-changing initiative that puts us on a path to succeed and provide a better understanding of HIV and STD prevention," said Dr. Vivian Ho, chief medical officer for New York's health department. The $100 million initiative aims to strengthen prevention, treatment and care for all Americans with HIV and viral hepatitis. Glauber said the collaborative effort will help states develop new and innovative strategies to prevent and control the HIV and viral hepatitis epidemics. "We want to make sure that they're well-informed and well-equipped to create the best practices in the U.S.," he said. States, which will each contribute up to $25 million to the center, will have access to all federal funds for prevention, treatment, care, and research, the CDC said.
